There is much hype in recent years about organic foods. New rules and regulations to purchase organic foods easier and safer. Most stores now carry some organic stocks, and even Wal-Mart is an organic part. You may be wondering if this is really worth the additional cost to you, and if you are buying organic really make a difference anyway. Here are the top three reasons why you should care:
1 Pesticides are toxic chemicals and they are going into your body.
Would you eat rat poison? Not? Really? So why do we eat insect venom? They have similar effects on your body and not good ones either. In high enough doses to be equally deadly for you as they are pests. They will do things like stop your heart, clear the central nervous system, or overload your kidneys. Of course, you will never eat enough pesticide residue that will kill you. However, these chemicals are not digested in the body, your body has no idea what to do with them. In fact no one knows what happens to them, most likely to receive stock piled in our fat cells, since the liver is confused about what to do with them (some think these poison-laden fat cells are what makes it so difficult to lose weight) . While it would be near impossible to do scientific studies show that, many believe that the stocks of poison is what causes the disease later in life. Currently the research is done trying to link certain pesticides to diseases such as Parkinson's disease.
2 Pesticides and herbicides are the opposite of environmentally friendly.
Most of the pesticides applied to crop or not to stay there. Because of wind and rain, and the spread of chemicals are not supposed to be like wild forests, rivers and oceans. This messes up the balance everywhere. Pesticides are not specific. They are toxic to most insects, even those useful animals and fish, too, herbicides are toxic to wild flowers and trees. New pesticides are being developed all the time, and some are not properly tested, we found out, after you get used to not degrade them as required. The old chemicals that are banned like DDT do not degrade at all, which means that they are still in the foods we eat. Using these types of chemicals have a long lasting effect. There is no way to undo mistakes, and now, all we can do is stop making new ones.
3 You are not the only one exposure.
Depending on where your products are grown, farm workers may be exposed to highly toxic levels of pesticides. In some countries, the crops are sprayed, and people (even children) are at work in the field, without any protection. It causes severe deformities and diseases. By purchasing products grown in this way, you are promoting and allows this kind of treatment. This is something that should be borne in mind when buying clothes as well. You May not be exposed to many chemicals when choosing between organic or non-organic cotton, but the field workers are another story.
To me, those reasons are more than enough to make me want to buy everything organic. My next problem, how to afford it! I'll meet you tomorrow on what foods are most important to be organic, if you're like me and you do not have the money.
Are these reasons enough to want to buy organic products? Do you agree with the use of conventional pesticides and herbicides, why or why not?
